Company Section - Summer 2010 |
|
Session 2009/2010 has now concluded with our Annual
Inspection & Display marking the culmination of an enjoyable
session.
The Boys all put in a lot of hard work to successfully showcase the
range of activities they take part in throughout the year and it proved
to be a fitting way to round off the session.
As always, the highlight of the evening
for the Boys was the presentation of prizes where the year's efforts
were rewarded. In particular, we were delighted when another one of our
senior boys was awarded his President's Badge. Attention will now turn
to the Brigade's highest award - the Queen's Badge.
Over the summer, our focus now moves to
our Annual Camp, which will be held at the Lagganlia Outdoor Centre
from August 9th to 13th. Lagganlia sits on the banks of Loch Insh, just
south of Aviemore.
Lagganlia Outdoor Centre
Fifteen boys and three staff will be
attending, and everyone is looking forward to the trip.
Enrolment for session 2010-2011 will
take place in early September 2010 but in the meantime, we wish all our
website readers a great summer!

Junior Section - Summer 2010 |
|
Another session came to a close on Friday, May 14th, when
the boys joined with the Company Section for a very
successful Inspection and Display. The boys showed off the figure
marching movements they had mastered throughout the year along with
their skills on the PE mat. The boys also took part in several games
that showcased our work throughout the session and it seems the parents
and spectators enjoyed their night as much as the boys.
The night ended with the prize-giving ceremony where a number of boys
picked up awards. Congratulations go to all the boys who went home with
trophies.
The Junior Section has also been successful once again in
competitions this year, with the Company being awarded the McKenzie
Memorial shield for the third year in succession.

This is a District prize given to the
section that performed best throughout the year in all the competitions
that were run, and is no easy achievement, so a huge well done to all
the boys from the section.
Our final event of the year was our trip with the Anchor Boys to
Edinburgh Zoo, which was held the day after the display. Thankfully the
sun shone for our trip and all the staff and boys had a great day out.
We are now looking forward to a relaxing summer before enrolling for
Session 2010-2011 in September - stayed tuned to the website for
further information in due course.

New website design |
|
Welcome to the relaunched
website of the 130th Glasgow Boys' Brigade.
The design has been revamped just over
five years after the Company's website was originally launched. Those
years have seen the Company website grow and become evermore popular
with local friends and ex-members from all over the world who want to
keep in contact with us.
Much of the content has remained
unchanged under the new design but hopefully visitors will enjoy the
fresh look to the site as well as additions to some of the pages,
including new photos on our Gallery page.
As always, further updates will be
added in future months and years but in the meantime, if anyone has any
comments or suggestions then we would be delighted to hear them. To get
in touch, email info@130thglasgow.co.uk

Company Section - May 2010 |
|
The Company has just
resumed following an extended Easter break, with efforts now focused on
our Annual Inspection and Display, which will be held in the large hall
on Friday, May 14th at 7.00pm.
The display of activities we shall present includes drill, bugle band,
PE, games and fellowship, followed by our prize giving, and we hope it
will prove to be an enjoyable night as always.
The Company also recently took part in the Partick District Parade,
held at St John’s Renfield Church in Kelvindale, to mark the
125th anniversary of the 5th Glasgow Company.
The morning proved to be a great occasion, and it even stayed dry for
the march past.
With summer just around the corner, thoughts are also turning towards
our summer camp, which will be held at the Lagganlia outdoor centre
near Aviemore this August.
Fifteen boys will be attending, and we’re hoping for another
successful and enjoyable week of activities.
Finally, our Friday night Company programme for May is as follows:
• Friday, May 7: 26th Parade Night, Session 2009/2010
• Friday, May 14: Annual Inspection & Display (Junior Section
& Company Section)
• Friday, May 21: Annual Display (Anchor Boys)

Company Section - April 2010 |
|
With Easter now upon us,
our thoughts are already turning towards our Annual Inspection and
Display which is to be held in mid-May.
Boys in all three sections will be busy practising for the Inspection
once they return from holiday but hopefully the hard work that everyone
puts in will be extremely worthwhile.
We have also been busy with a number of competitions having taken place
in recent weeks. We came fourth at the District drill competition, a
number of boys took part in the District badminton and table tennis
competitions, and we also competed in the District five-a-side
competition at the Kelvin Hall.
Recently, we also welcomed some senior members of our Junior Section to
join Company Section for the evening to see some of the activities
they'll be taking part in next session.
We will enjoy an extended break because of the school spring holidays
before Company Section resumes for its final few weeks on Friday, April
23rd.
Our Friday night Company Section programme for April is as follows:
• Friday, April 2: No meeting - Easter break
• Friday, April 9: No meeting - Easter break
• Friday, April 16: No meeting - Easter break
• Friday, April 23: 24th Parade Night, Session 2009/2010
• Friday, April 30: 25th Parade Night, Session 2009/2010

Company Section - March 2010 |
|
The Company has enjoyed a
busy period of events and competitions during February and into March
and the next few weeks look similarly packed.
The highlight of February was our second parade of the session, with
excellent weather allowing the boys to enjoy the march past and our
bugle band to demonstrate their hard-work over recent months.
In early March, Company Section attended Hampden for the Scotland v
Czech Republic football international and were delighted to witness a
1-0 for the home side.
All the boys and staff had an enjoyable
night and it is hopefully the sort of event that the Company can attend
again in future months and years.
The Company also participated in a busy run of competitions with the
drill, badminton and ten-pin bowling competitions all well attended by
the boys. In future weeks, the boys will have the chance to enjoy
further competitions, including the table-tennis event in mid-March.
Our Friday night Company Section programme for March is as follows:
• Friday, March 5: 20th Parade Night, Session 2009/2010
• Friday, March 12: 21st Parade Night, Session 2009/2010
• Friday, March 19: 22nd Parade Night, Session 2009/2010
• Friday, March 26: 23rd Parade Night, Session 2009/2010

Company Section - February 2010 |
|
The start of 2010 kicked
off a busy period for the boys and staff of the Company with February
looking like a similarly packed month.
During January, the Company enjoyed its annual Burns Supper which was
once again a huge success, with the boys playing a large part in making
the evening so enjoyable through the various recitals and toasts.
The Company also enjoyed victory at the recent District Chess
competition, with first and third places respectively in the Junior and
Senior events. In February, the Company will hopefully be participating
in the District Ten-Pin Bowling, Scripture Knowledge and Drill
competitions.
However, the highlight of the month will be the second church parade of
the session on February 21st - the band have been practising diligently
and we are hoping for better weather after the disappointment of heavy
rain at the first parade in November.
Our Friday night Company Section programme for February is as follows:
• Friday, February 5: 16th Parade Night, Session 2009/2010
• Friday, February 12: 17th Parade Night, Session 2009/2010
• Friday, February 19: 18th Parade Night, Session 2009/2010
• Friday, February 26: 19th Parade Night, Session 2009/2010

Company Section - January 2010 |
|
The Company resumes for
2010 with a busy run of events planned in January. In particular,
Company Section is looking forward to the annual Burns Supper which
will be held at the end of January.
Our two younger sections also have a packed calendar ahead with the
Anchor Boys Battalion roadshow being held at Broomhill Church this
month and Junior Section competing in a number of District competitions
in future weeks.
Many of these events are helped by the support of friends of the
Company, as well as the participation of boys and their parents. Once
again, we would like to thank everyone who has supported the Company
over the last twelve months - either through time, support or donations
to supplement our funds and enable us to purchase equipment - in
particular, instruments for bugle band.
Our Friday night Company Section programme for January is as follows:
• Friday, January 8: 13th Parade Night, Session 2009/2010
• Friday, January 15: 14th Parade Night, Session 2009/2010
• Friday, January 22: Annual Burns Supper
• Friday, January 29: 15th Parade Night, Session 2009/2010
Finally, everyone at the Company wishes our friends and website
visitors a very happy 2010!

Company Section - December 2009 |
|
The Company is beginning
to look towards the Christmas break but December remains a busy month
with competitions, events and parties all taking up sizeable chunks of
the boys' and staff's time!
As well as being an enjoyable month for
the Company as a result of the upcoming festivities, December also
marks the 105th anniversary since the formation of the 130th Glasgow.

Based at Broomhill Church in the west end of Glasgow for the duration
of its existence, the Company has enjoyed a rich history and has been
served by many notable figures throughout the years. Those young men
who have been members of the Company across the decades still look back
at their time in the BB with pride and we hope this website can help to
maintain a link between the 130th Glasgow and its former members.
And as we approach the end of 2009, we
would also like to pass on our sincerest thanks to everyone who has
supported the Company during the past year and wish all our friends and
website visitors a very Merry Christmas and a happy 2010!
Our Friday night Company Section programme for December is as follows:
• Friday, December 4: 11th Parade Night, Session 2009/2010
• Friday, December 11: 12th Parade Night, Session 2009/2010
• Friday, December 18: Annual Christmas Party

Mr James K. Cubie |
|
The Company was sad to
hear of the recent death of Mr James Cubie, who served as Company
Captain from 1952 to 1961.
Jim's time as Captain was highly distinguished, running the Company
with great success during the post-war period and overseeing a large
increase in boys joining the 130th Glasgow.
After stepping down as Captain, Jim remained a loyal friend of the
Company, attending events and supporting the boys whenever possible.
This happened none more so than during the time his son Gordon served
as Captain throughout the 1990s.
As well as his devotedness to the Boys' Brigade, Jim played an
important role within Broomhill Church, serving as an Elder of the
church with great care and diligence.
In recent years, Jim remained a regular attendee at our BB Annual
Inspection and was present to share the celebrations during the
Company's Centenary session in 2004/05.
Our thoughts are with his family at this time.

Company Section - November 2009 |
|
The Company is looking
forward to the month ahead, with a busy period in store between our
regular parade night activities and other competitions and events.
November began with our first Uniformed Organisations church service of
the session but the weather put a slight dampener on the day, with the
rain forcing us to cancel the planned parade after the service. Whilst
a disappointment for all involved, the Company's bugle band will
continue to practise enthusiastically and hopefully all the effort that
has been put in will shine through at events throughout the rest of the
year!
Amongst the Company Section competitions planned for this month are the
District Masterteam quiz as well as one of the highlight events of the
calendar, the District Sports at the Kelvin Hall.
The Company has traditionally performed well at this event in recent
years and we hope it will prove enjoyable once again this time.
This month's weekly meetings are detailed below:
• Friday, November 6: 7th Parade Night, Session 2009/2010
• Friday, November 13: 8th Parade Night, Session 2009/2010
• Friday, November 20: 9th Parade Night, Session 2009/2010
• Friday, November 27: 10th Parade Night, Session 2009/2010

Company Section - October 2009 |
|
The Company has had a
busy, but enjoyable, start to the session. Badgework and band practice
has resumed for Company Section and the new members in each of the
three sections are enjoying the activities planned so far!
Both Company Section and Junior Section enjoyed a trip to Lazer Planet
in Clydebank at the end of last month and further events and
competitions are resuming for the new session.
For Company Section, the first competition of the year is the District
Cross Country at Kelvingrove Park on Saturday 3rd October. Hopefully
we'll have a run of success across the various age levels at this
year's event!
This month's weekly meetings are detailed below:
