130th Glasgow Company, The Boys' Brigade

Broomhill Church, Glasgow

News

  • The start of 2010 kicked off a busy period for the boys and staff of the Company with February looking like a similarly packed month.
  • During January, the Company enjoyed its annual Burns Supper which was once again a huge success, with the boys playing a large part in making the evening so enjoyable through the various recitals and toasts.
  • The Company also enjoyed victory at the recent District Chess competition, with first and third places respectively in the Junior and Senior events. In February, the Company will hopefully be participating in the District Ten-Pin Bowling, Scripture Knowledge and Drill competitions.
  • However, the highlight of the month will be the second church parade of the session on February 21st - the band have been practising diligently and we are hoping for better weather after the disappointment of heavy rain at the first parade in November.
  • This month's edition of our newsletter is now available to download here.
  • Our Friday night Company Section programme for February is as follows
          - Friday, February 5:  16th Parade Night, Session 2009/2010

          - Friday, February 12:  17th Parade Night, Session 2009/2010

          - Friday, February 19:  18th Parade Night, Session 2009/2010

          - Friday, February 26:  19th Parade Night, Session 2009/2010

  • The Company resumes for 2010 with a busy run of events planned in January. In particular, Company Section is looking forward to the annual Burns Supper which will be held at the end of January.
  • Our two younger sections also have a packed calendar ahead with the Anchor Boys Battalion roadshow being held at Broomhill Church this month and Junior Section competing in a number of District competitions in future weeks.
  • Many of these events are helped by the support of friends of the Company, as well as the participation of boys and their parents. Once again, we would like to thank everyone who has supported the Company over the last twelve months - either through time, support or donations to supplement our funds and enable us to purchase equipment - in particular, instruments for bugle band.
  • Our Friday night Company Section programme for January is as follows:
          - Friday, January 8:  13th Parade Night, Session 2009/2010

          - Friday, January 15:  14th Parade Night, Session 2009/2010

          - Friday, January 22:  Annual Burns Supper

          - Friday, January 29:  15th Parade Night,
Session 2009/2010
  • Finally, everyone at the Company wishes our friends and website visitors a very happy 2010!

  • The Company is beginning to look towards the Christmas break but December remains a busy month with competitions, events and parties all taking up sizeable chunks of the boys' and staffs' time!

  • As well as being an enjoyable month for the Company as a result of the upcoming festivities, December also marks the 105th anniversary since the formation of the 130th Glasgow.

  • Based at Broomhill Church in the west end of Glasgow for the duration of its existence, the Company has enjoyed a rich history and has been served by many notable figures throughout the years. Those young men who have been members of the Company across the decades still look back at their time in the BB with pride and we hope this website can help to maintain a link between the 130th Glasgow and its former members.
  • In the meantime, further details regarding the Company's current activities can read our December 2009/January 2010 update, which is now available to download.
  • And as we approach the end of 2009, we would also like to pass on our sincerest thanks to everyone who has supported the Company during the past year and wish all our friends and website visitors a very Merry Christmas and a happy 2010!

  • Our Friday night Company Section programme for December is as follows:

          - Friday, December 4:  11th Parade Night, Session 2009/2010

          - Friday, December 11:  12th Parade Night, Session 2009/2010

          - Friday, December 18:
Annual Christmas Party

  • The Company was sad to hear of the recent death of Mr James Cubie, who served as Company Captain from 1952 to 1961.

Jim's time as Captain was highly distinguished, running the Company with great success during the post-war period and overseeing a large increase in boys joining the 130th Glasgow.

After stepping down as Captain, Jim remained a loyal friend of the Company, attending events and supporting the boys whenever possible. This happened none more so than during the time his son Gordon served as Captain throughout the 1990s.

As well as his devotedness to the Boys' Brigade, Jim played an important role within Broomhill Church, serving as a Elder of the church with great care and diligence.

In recent years, Jim remained a regular attendee at our BB Annual Inspection and was present to share the celebrations during the Company's Centenary session in 2004/05.

Our thoughts are with his family at this time.

    Saturday 7th November 2009

  • The Company is looking forward to the month ahead, with a busy period in store between our regular parade night activities and other competitions and events.
  • November began with our first Uniformed Organisations church service of the session but the weather put a slight dampener on the day, with the rain forcing us to cancel the planned parade after the service. Whilst a disappointment for all involved, the Company's bugle band will continue to practise enthusiastically and hopefully all the effort that has been put in will shine through at events throughout the rest of the year!
  • Amongst the Company Section competitions planned for this month are the District Masterteam quiz as well as one of the highlight events of the calendar, the District Sports at the Kelvin Hall.

  • The Company has traditionally performed well at this event in recent years and we hope it will prove enjoyable once again this time.
  • Our monthly update for November is now available to read here.

  • This month's weekly meetings are detailed below:

          - Friday, November 27: 10th Parade Night, Session 2009/2010

  • The Company has had a busy, but enjoyable, start to the session. Badgework and band practice has resumed for Company Section and the new members in each of the three sections are enjoying the activities planned so far!

  • Both Company Section and Junior Section enjoyed a trip to Lazer Planet in Clydebank at the end of last month and further events and competitions are resuming for the new session.

  • For Company Section, the first competition of the year is the District Cross Country at Kelvingrove Park on Saturday 3rd October. Hopefully we'll have a run of success across the various age levels at this year's event!

  • In other news, Company Section has recently returned from our annual holiday, this year at Broomlee Outdoor Centre in West Linton, Peeblesshire. The weather was relatively kind to us and everyone had a great time participating in a range of activities including archery, hillwalking and rock-climbing.

  • More information on our camp, plus enrolment details for Company Section, is available to download in our monthly section update.

  • The Company would like to thank Glasgow City Council's Partick West Area Committee for funding to buy three new marching snare drums for use by our Bugle Band.

  • The drums will be used at events such as church parades and our Annual Inspection and Display, and will give the Bugle Band a big boost as it continues to improve.

  • Session 2008/2009 has now concluded with our Annual Inspection & Display marking the culmination of an enjoyable session.
  • The Boys all put in a lot of hard work and successfully showcased the range of activities they take part in throughout the year. As always, the highlight of the evening for the Boys was the presentation of prizes where the year's efforts were rewarded. In particular, we were delighted to see the hard work of two Seniors from the Company rewarded as they collected their President's Badges.

  • We were heartened by all the positive comments regarding the Display so we hope it was an enjoyable evening all round!
  • This session has once again seen the Company enjoy a rise in membership across the three sections and hopefully this provides an indication of the enjoyment experienced by the boys as they take part in various activities.
  • Our Anchor Boy section has had a busy year, taking part in several Glasgow-wide 125th Anniversary events and having great fun along the way. Junior Section has continued its success in competitions, with the boys winning the McKenzie Memorial shield for the second year in succession for their performances in District events. Meanwhile, Company Section has enjoyed a great session, the highlight of which was participation in the Tattoo at Braehead.
  • However, the Company is already looking ahead to Session 2009/10 and before that, our Annual Company Section camp, which this year will be held at the Broomlee Outdoor Centre in August.
  • Our Summer 2009 update is now available to download.
  • Finally, all the Boys and Officers of the Company would like to wish our website readers an enjoyable and relaxing summer break.

  • We are now in the final month of Session 2008/2009 and the Company is putting the finishing touches to preparations for our 104th Annual Inspection & Display.
  • However, whilst we remain busy with practice there are also various events planned, with the highlight being our visit to Blair Drummond safari park.  Hopefully the weather will be good for this trip!
  • Congratulations go to everyone who participated in the 125th Anniversary BB Tattoo at Braehead Arena on April 25th. The Company was represented by two of our senior boys who played in the bugle band and they contributed to what was a very successful and entertaining occasion.

          - Friday, May 15:  104th Annual Inspection & Display

  • The arrival of April allows the Company to enjoy the Easter break but preparations continue behind the scenes for our Annual Inspection and Display in May.
  • Boys in all three sections will be busy practising for the Inspection once they return from holiday but hopefully the hard work that everyone puts in will be extremely worthwhile.
  • The Company would like to express our gratitude to all who attended and donated items for our recent coffee morning held at Broomhill Church - the assistance and support received from friends of the Company is greatly appreciated.
  • Full details of recent events and forthcoming competitions are included in our monthly article, which is now available to download.
  • The Company is also looking forward to being represented at the forthcoming Boys' Brigade Tattoo to be held at Braehead on April 25th. Several of our Senior Boys will be playing in the bugle band at what should hopefully prove to be a great event. More information on the Tattoo, including details on how to purchase tickets, is available by clicking on the image below:

  • Meanwhile, there have been updates to our website - a history of productions and shows staged by the Company has been added to the site. Thanks to Gordon Cubie, former 130th Glasgow Captain, for compiling and writing this history. The information can be accessed through our history page.
