.: Company Section - February 2011

The Company has been busy during the last month, with the highlight being our annual Burns Supper which was held in late-January. All boys participated in a lively evening of music and poetry as well as enjoying some food and drink. Participation in the evening counts towards the Company's awards programme, and the evening proved to be an enjoyable way of learning about our national bard.

The boys are also busy working towards some important forthcoming events. The second Service for Uniformed Organisations is being held on Sunday February 5th, and the Company will be taking part in the District drill competition which will be held at the end of February.

That follows on from some competitions which took place just before Christmas. The annual District Sports featuring a number of track and field events was held at the Kelvin Hall, while the District swimming gala was also held for the first time in a number of years.

One of our senior boys, Ryan Threlfall, also took part in a leadership course organised by Glasgow Battalion earlier this month. The course forms part of the work Ryan is undertaking in order to gain his President's Badge at the end of this session.

Our Friday night Company Section programme for February is as follows:

• Friday, February 3: 15th Parade Night, Session 2011/2012
• Friday, February 10: 16th Parade Night, Session 2011/2012
• Friday, February 17: 17th Parade Night, Session 2011/2012
• Friday, February 24: 18th Parade Night, Session 2011/2012

.: Company Section - December 2011

The run-up to the festive period is proving to be a very busy one for Company Section with a number of events having recently taken place and many more in the pipeline.

Firstly, the Company would like to thank all those who attended the Service for Uniformed Organisations on November 6. It proved to be a very enjoyable occasion and we were delighted that the weather stayed dry for the march past, with our Bugle Band playing very well indeed.

It's been a busy time for competitions, with the District badminton competition having taken place at the Kelvin Hall earlier this month and more than 60 boys from across the area attending the event.

Before Christmas, boys will also be taking part in the District sports competition at the Kelvin Hall, featuring a range of track and field events, and the District swimming gala at Cleveden swimming pool.

There have also been a couple of Company events, with boys having enjoyed a game of five-a-sides earlier this month at Scotstoun.

A couple of weeks later, we travelled to the Braehead Arena to see the Braehead Clan ice hockey team.

Braehead Clan v Coventry Blaze

The match saw the Clan face Coventry Blaze in the British Elite Ice Hockey League and we were delighted to see the home side triumph 3-1 in a close match.

Our activities will culminate on Friday, December 16 with our traditional Christmas fancy dress party, including the usual mix of festive games and activities. Company Section will resume after the holidays on Friday, January 13.

And as we approach the end of 2011, we would like to pass on our sincerest thanks to everyone who has supported the Company during the past year and wish all our friends and website visitors a very Merry Christmas and a happy new year!

Finally, December's weekly meetings are detailed below:

• Friday, December 2: 11th Parade Night, Session 2011/2012
• Friday, December 9: 12th Parade Night, Session 2011/2012
• Friday, December 16: Annual Christmas Party

.: Company Section - November 2011

The Company Section programme is continuing with a series of events and competitions on the horizon.

In recent weeks a number of our boys have begun the process of learning to play the bugle. Our bugle band has made great strides in recent years and we are hopeful that it will increase in strength as more boys improve in terms of skill and confidence.

The bugle band will have their first outing of the session at the service for uniformed organisations which takes place on Sunday, November 6th, assuming the weather is dry enough to allow for a march past.

The coming weeks will also see the first competitions of the session with other companies in the district, including the District Badminton Competition at the Kelvin Hall.

And although it's early in the session, the Company has already put in place plans for our annual camp next summer. We will be staying at the Galloway Activity Centre on the banks of Loch Ken, north of Newton Stewart, from Monday, August 6th to Friday, August 10th 2012.

During our time there we will be enjoying activities such as sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, canoeing and climbing, and we expect to have around 18 boys making the trip, so it is already shaping up to be an enjoyable and very busy few days.

Meanwhile, this month's weekly meetings are detailed below:

• Friday, November 4: 7th Parade Night, Session 2011/2012
• Friday, November 11: 8th Parade Night, Session 2011/2012
• Friday, November 18: 9th Parade Night, Session 2011/2012

.: Company Section - October 2011

The new session is now well underway with 22 boys having enrolled for Company Section, meaning the section is now bigger than it has been since the 1990s.

The increasing numbers presents new opportunities and challenges for the Company, and we are delighted to welcome back Stephen Craig and Stewart Gray as staff sergeants for the new session.

Stewart and Stephen have already shown great leadership within the Company in recent years, and we are looking forward to them continuing to have a positive influence in the years to come.

Already we have had a busy time within the Company. The BB ran a stall at the Naseby Park Fun Day, and just before the September weekend, the boys visited the Lazer Planet arena at the Scotkart racing track in Clydebank.

We also have three boys working towards their Queen’s Badges at the moment.

The work they undertake includes leadership within the Company, community service and pursuing other activities. Luke Craig and Scott Davidson got off to a good start by completing the Great Scottish Run 10k in an impressive 49 minutes, while Jordan Thomson, who hopes to receive his Queen’s Badge this session, completed an expedition to fulfil that part of the requirements.

We are also now making plans for the months ahead with a number of events just around the corner.

There are several district competitions to be held in future weeks, and with one eye on the first Church Parade of the session on November 6, we are hoping to have more boys learning to play the bugle and the snare drum in the coming weeks and months.

Our Friday night Company Section programme for October is below:

• Friday, October 7: 4th Parade Night, Session 2011/2012
• Friday, October 14: 5th Parade Night, Session 2011/2012
• Friday, October 21: No meeting - October week holiday
• Friday, October 28: 6th Parade Night, Session 2011/2012

.: Company Section - September 2011

The Company is looking forward to the imminent start to the session, with our regular programme about to resume.

The number of members in Company Section has risen once again, and there will be a number of new boys starting work on badges and attending band practice in the coming weeks.

This busy start to the session will also be coupled with the resumption of District competitions, whilst we also hope to organise a number of additional Company events in coming weeks and months.

In addition, there will also be Company representation at the community gala day to be held on Saturday, September 17. As always, we'll be hoping the sun shines on the day, especially within the nice surroundings of the venue at Naseby Park, Broomhill.

.: Company Section - Annual Camp 2011

Our Annual Camp has now passed for another year, with twenty boys and three staff enjoying five days of activities at the Craggan Outdoor Centre on the banks of Loch Tay

During our time away, the boys participated in activities including climbing, archery, sailing, canoeing, bowling and swimming among others.

Hillwalking at Ardeonaig

The weather proved to be mixed, with sunshine on the first couple of days giving way to rain, but with many of the activities taking place in water anyway, we all still managed to have an enjoyable time.

Camp also marked the last duty for Andrew Smith as a member of staff, whose leadership in the kitchen again kept us all well-fed. We now say goodbye to Andrew and wish him all the best for the future.

.: Company Section - Summer 2011

The Company would like to thank everyone who attended our Annual Inspection and Display on May 13th.

The evening proved to be a great success, with two of our senior boys, Stephen Craig and Stewart Gray, receiving their Queen's Badges, the highest award in the Brigade.

Stewart and Stephen also received their discharge certificates at the Display, having reached the Brigade age limit.

The evening also saw another two of our senior boys, Luke Craig and Scott Davidson, receiving their President's Badges. They will begin work on their Queen's Badges shortly.

This year's display was also special as it was the last for two of our officers. As our Chaplain, Rev. Bill Ferguson was presented with a small gift from the Company ahead of his retirement, and there was also a presentation for Andrew Smith, who is stepping down as Lieutenant.

Attention will now turn towards our Summer Camp, which takes place at the Craggan Outdoor Centre on the banks of Loch Tay from August 8th to 12th. No less than 20 boys will be attending, so it's shaping up to be a very busy week.

Finally, Company Section will enrol for session 2011-2012 in the large hall on Friday, September 2nd at 8.00pm.

The evening was great fun, with the Braehead Clan beating the Hull Stingrays 6-1.

.: Company Section - March 2011

The Company has enjoyed a busy spell recently, one of the highlights being the recent uniformed organisations service. We were delighted to see so many people there to share in the occasion and it was an enjoyable morning for all, especially for our bugle band who performed excellently in the march past after the service.

In recent weeks the Company has also taken part in a number of competitions, including the District badminton competition and the District sports, both at the Kelvin Hall. In the case of the sports, the Company finished an impressive second place overall by only one point.

Over the next month, we'll be taking part in a range of other District competitions such as the table tennis and five-a-side football.

In mid-March two of our senior boys, Stephen Craig and Stewart Gray, will be attending their Queen's Badge residential course at Auchengillan Outdoor Centre. This is one of the final requirements ahead of them receiving their awards.

That will be one of the highlights of our 106th Annual Inspection and Display, which will be held in the large hall on Friday, May 13th.

Finally, the Company would like to invite everyone to a coffee morning being held in aid of Company funds in the church halls on Saturday, March 26th from 10.00am to 12 noon.

Attractions will include home baking, hot rolls, games, quizzes and stalls, and everyone will be made most welcome.
