When I took over as
Captain in 1988, the Company had a very good core of
Boys and I encouraged them to enter as many competitions
as possible. Very soon, the Company won the District
Drill Championship for the first time in many years and
the District Bible Quiz, General Knowledge Quiz,
Swimming Gala as well as the Table Tennis, Darts, Chess,
Pool, Badminton and Sports were all won by our Boys.
This resulted in the 130 being crowned as District
Champions in 3 years and runners-up in another 5 of my
captaincy. The Boys also reached the National Final of
the Masterteam Quiz on two occasions and competed in
many Glasgow Battalion events with great distinction.
Success grew from
success and soon the Boys were, once again, achieving
their President’s Badge and Queen’s Badge – the highest
award in the Brigade. A change in the Brigade age rules
at this time meant that one year’s intake of Boys were
able to be members for 7 years instead of the usual 6
and one Boy, Alexander Rice, managed to achieve a full 7
years Perfect Attendance (missing not one Friday night,
Bible Class or Church Parade) which was a quite
remarkable feat.
Whilst the majority
of this history has been about the Company Section, one
must also make mention of the Lifeboys and Shipmates,
started in the 1950’s (now, of course, the Junior
Section and the Anchor Boys) which are now formally a
part of the 130th Glasgow. Now that all three
sections hold a joint Annual Display, we are able to see
more of the activities and achievements of the younger
Boys and the unbounded enthusiasm with which they
participate. Tribute should be paid at this point to the
lifelong service given by Miss Elsie Shedden to these
two sections of the Company.
